Background of the Study:
The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in academic institutions has significantly enhanced connectivity, automation, and digital learning experiences. Universities use IoT-enabled devices for smart classrooms, surveillance systems, environmental monitoring, and asset tracking. However, the widespread deployment of IoT devices also introduces challenges, particularly in network congestion, security vulnerabilities, and bandwidth management (Abdullahi et al., 2023).

Federal University, Gashua, has seen an increase in IoT adoption, leading to concerns about its impact on network performance. IoT devices generate continuous data streams, increasing network traffic and potentially degrading connectivity speeds. Additionally, many IoT devices have weak security configurations, making them susceptible to cyber threats (Jiang & Zhang, 2024). This study investigates how IoT devices affect the university’s network performance and explores optimization strategies to ensure seamless connectivity.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the growing use of IoT devices at Federal University, Gashua, there is limited research on their impact on network performance. The increasing number of connected devices contributes to bandwidth congestion, latency issues, and security vulnerabilities. Without proper management, the university’s network could experience frequent slowdowns and potential security breaches.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of IoT device connectivity on the network performance of Federal University, Gashua.

  2. To analyze the security vulnerabilities associated with IoT device integration in the university’s network.

  3. To propose strategies for optimizing IoT device management to enhance network efficiency and security.

Research Questions:

  1. How do IoT devices affect network performance, including bandwidth utilization and latency, at Federal University, Gashua?

  2. What security vulnerabilities do IoT devices introduce to the university’s network infrastructure?

  3. What measures can be implemented to optimize IoT device management and ensure improved network performance?

Significance of the Study:
This study is crucial in understanding how IoT adoption impacts the network infrastructure of Federal University, Gashua. The findings will assist IT administrators in implementing better bandwidth management and security policies to improve overall network performance. Additionally, the research will contribute to existing literature on IoT in educational institutions, providing insights into optimizing IoT device deployment while maintaining network stability.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to analyzing the impact of IoT devices on the network performance of Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State. It focuses on bandwidth utilization, latency, and security concerns associated with IoT integration. Other aspects, such as power consumption and cost analysis, are beyond the scope of this research.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Internet of Things (IoT): A network of interconnected devices that collect and exchange data through the internet.

  • Bandwidth Utilization: The amount of data transmitted over a network connection within a given period.

  • Latency: The time delay between sending and receiving data packets over a network.
